AN ACT
Amending the act of February 9, 1984 (P.L.3, No.2), entitled "An
act providing for the education and training of sheriffs and
deputy sheriffs; creating the Sheriff and Deputy Sheriff
Education and Training Board under the Pennsylvania
Commission on Crime and Delinquency; providing for the powers
and duties of the board and the Attorney General;
establishing the Sheriff and Deputy Sheriff Education and
Training Account; providing for a surcharge on sheriffs'
fees; and providing penalties," further providing for sheriff
training requirements.
The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
hereby enacts as follows:
Section 1. Section 6.1(a)(1)(i) of the act of February 9,
1984 (P.L.3, No.2), known as the Sheriff and Deputy Sheriff
Education and Training Act, is amended and the subsection is
amended by adding a paragraph to read:
Section 6.1. Sheriff training requirement.
(a) Certification required.--
(1) It shall be the duty of any sheriff elected after
the effective date of this section and not holding
certification as either a deputy sheriff or sheriff on the
first Monday in January next following the election, during

the sheriff's term of office:
(i) To obtain the education and training as provided
in section 5, subject to any reduction in hours as
provided in subsection (c) or exemption under paragraph
(3).

(3) An elected sheriff in a second class A county who
has served at least ten years in the Armed Services,
including the National Guard and Reserves of the United
States, and is licensed to practice law in this Commonwealth
and is in good standing shall be exempted from the Sheriff
and Deputy Sheriff Education and Training Program and
eligible to run for reelection. An elected sheriff who is
exempted under this paragraph shall be required to meet the
continuing education requirements under section 6.

Section 2. This act shall take effect in 60 days.
