A RESOLUTION
Recognizing March 8, 2016, as "International Women's Day" in
Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, The Senate acknowledges women's economic, political
and social achievements and pays tribute to their role in
strengthening and connecting communities in this Commonwealth
and beyond; and
WHEREAS, The Senate joins women's groups around the world who
are observing "International Women's Day" without regard to
national boundaries, ethnicity, language, culture or
socioeconomic status; and
WHEREAS, The Senate commemorates the struggle for women's
rights and applauds women's notable progress and aspirations
relative to equality, justice, peace and global development; and
WHEREAS, Women in this Commonwealth, who comprise more than
50% of the population, and women around the world are
steadfastly pursuing these goals despite recessions, wars or
unrest, disease, oppression and the burdens of poverty; and

WHEREAS, The first "International Women's Day" was held in
1911 during a time of great expansion and turbulence in the
industrialized world; and
WHEREAS, Significant attention to working conditions and
labor legislation in the United States became the focus for the
1911 and subsequent Women's Day events and now each year
"International Women's Day" is celebrated on March 8; and
WHEREAS, Annually on "International Women's Day," thousands
of events are held throughout the world to inspire women and
celebrate the social, political and economic achievements of
women while focusing world attention on areas requiring further
action; and
WHEREAS, The 2016 theme of "International Women's Day" is
"Pledge for Parity"; and
WHEREAS, The vast array of communication channels, supportive
spokespeople, equality research, campaigns and corporate
responsibility initiatives means everyone can be an advocate,
inspiring change for women's advancement and mark the economic,
political and social achievements of women and women's
organizations; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize March 8, 2016, as
"International Women's Day" in Pennsylvania and respectfully
acknowledge women's rich and diverse accomplishments and
tireless aspirations.
