A RESOLUTION
Designating the month of June 2015 as "Gun Violence Awareness
Month" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Gun violence is a national and local problem
affecting many Americans on a daily basis; and
WHEREAS, The residents of this Commonwealth have the
potential to reduce and even prevent gun violence as well as the
responsibility to further public safety and public health by
taking action to protect against gun violence; and
WHEREAS, An average of 88 Americans die every day due to gun
violence, which is more than the deaths suffered in the
tragedies in Newtown, Virginia Tech and Columbine combined; and
WHEREAS, We lose more than four times as many Americans to
gun violence every year than the number of American soldiers we
have lost in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan combined; and
WHEREAS, Americans are 20 times more likely to be murdered
with a gun than citizens in other developed countries; and
WHEREAS, According to the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco
and Firearms, law enforcement agencies confiscated 9,459

illegally possessed guns in this Commonwealth that were used in
the commission of crimes in 2013; and
WHEREAS, "Gun Violence Awareness Month" is a Statewide and
nationwide occasion to honor the victims of gun violence by
encouraging education and understanding to prevent gun crimes in
the future; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate designate the month of June 2015 as
"Gun Violence Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania in recognition of
this public safety and public health issue.
