A RESOLUTION
Commemorating the 200th anniversary of the incorporation of
Pocono Township, Monroe County.
WHEREAS, Pocono Township, Monroe County, which consists of 35
square miles, is bounded to the north by Tunkhannock and
Tobyhanna Townships, to the east by Coolbaugh and Paradise
Townships and to the west by Jackson Township; and
WHEREAS, The land which would become Pocono Township, then
known as Pocono Point, was originally settled in 1750; and
WHEREAS, The township was officially created by a decree of
the Northampton County courts in 1816; and
WHEREAS, The township got its name from the Native American
word "Pocohanne," which means a stream between two mountains,
due to the Pocono Mountains which extend across the township;
and
WHEREAS, A famous path used by the Native Americans was
initially widened for stage coach use before being converted to
highways; and
WHEREAS, Route 611 was formerly the Lackawanna Trail; and

WHEREAS, In 1779, General John Sullivan and his soldiers
camped at Learned's Tavern after a 16-mile march from Heller's
Tavern; and
WHEREAS, Though Learned's Tavern burned down approximately 16
years ago, there is still a historical marker in the former
tavern's location; and
WHEREAS, Though the township's population was just 564 in
1830, in 2009, the township had a population of more than
10,000; and
WHEREAS, In December 2015, the Pocono Heritage Foundation,
Inc., was established to plan, raise funds for and establish a
multipurpose center that serves the community and will be
located at Mountain View Park; and
WHEREAS, The Pocono Heritage Center, currently 80% funded,
will display the rich heritage of Pocono Township and the
surrounding community and provide educational opportunities to
students; and
WHEREAS, The groundbreaking ceremony for the center was held
on April 30, 2016; and
WHEREAS, The Pocono Heritage Center is to be the centerpiece
of the bicentennial celebration; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commemorate the
200th anniversary of the incorporation of Pocono Township,
Monroe County; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to
the 2016 Pocono Township Bicentennial Committee.
