equality; and
WHEREAS, This year marks the fifth observance of "Day of the
Girl," which continues to emphasize that girls in Pennsylvania
and across the world can realize their dreams by achieving
through education, especially by targeting the fast-changing
areas of science and technology in schools, universities and
vocational education programs so that girls develop the skills
for jobs that drive our 21st century economy; and
WHEREAS, Several groups throughout this Commonwealth,
including Girls on the Run, the Girl Scouts, the Women and Girls
Foundation of Southwest Pennsylvania, iTwixie and the Girls
Coalition of Southwestern Pennsylvania, have organized many
different activities aimed at the "Day of the Girl" observance,
including a Day of the Girl Summit in Pittsburgh; and
WHEREAS, The House of Representatives supports increasing
girls' participation and achievement in education, science and
math-related activities, increasing high school graduation rates
and providing equal opportunities for all girls by speaking out
against gender-based injustices, celebrating all girls'
potential and encouraging all girls to pursue their dreams
through education and otherwise; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize October
11, 2016, as the "Day of the Girl" in Pennsylvania; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives congratulate and
thank all groups involved in promoting "Day of the Girl"
activities in this Commonwealth and all those who work every day
to promote girls' empowerment and the fulfillment of their human
rights for their efforts to help girls in this Commonwealth and
elsewhere achieve their full potential.
