A RESOLUTION
Commemorating the 150th anniversary of the founding of the
Borough of Plymouth, Luzerne County.
WHEREAS, In April 1866, 150 years ago this year, the Borough
of Plymouth in Luzerne County was incorporated; and
WHEREAS, The history of Plymouth dates back to the 17th
century, when the town, then known as Shawnee or Shawneetown,
was formed as a center of agricultural activity encompassing
lands along the Susquehanna River in what is now northeastern
Pennsylvania; and
WHEREAS, The region has been home to farmers, miners,
entrepreneurs and statesmen, including Pennsylvania Governor
Arthur Horace James, who held that office from 1939 through
1943; and
WHEREAS, Plymouth residents have a long history of trade via
the North Branch Canal and the Lackawanna and Bloomsburg

Railroad, which connected Plymouth to the nation's growing
transportation grid in 1857 and led to the rapid transformation
of the small village into a major supplier of anthracite coal;
and
WHEREAS, On September 6, 1869, the Avondale Mine Disaster
near Plymouth took the lives of 108 men and boys working at the
colliery as well as two rescuers; and
WHEREAS, In response to these tragic deaths, the General
Assembly enacted a mining safety law in 1870 to regulate
anthracite mines, requiring the employment of State mine
inspectors and the mapping of all mine works; and
WHEREAS, In addition to its historically significant role in
the anthracite coal industry, Plymouth has been home to the
Plymouth Street Electric Railway, the North Branch Canal and the
First National Bank; and
WHEREAS, This year marks the sesquicentennial of the Borough
of Plymouth's founding; and
WHEREAS, Special events for borough residents and visitors
include parades, a kielbasa festival and a celebratory dinner
featuring the opening of a time capsule; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commemorate the
150th anniversary of the founding of the Borough of Plymouth,
Luzerne County.
