A RESOLUTION
Designating May 18, 2016, as "ASSET STEM Education Day" in
Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, ASSET STEM Education (ASSET) was founded in 1994 by
Bayer Corporation and other community partners to improve
science education in Allegheny County schools; and
WHEREAS, ASSET was awarded a prestigious grant from the
Investing in Innovation Fund (i3) from the United States
Department of Education to implement the ASSET Regional
Professional Development Centers for Advancing STEM Education in
Pennsylvania Program between October 2010 and September 2015;
and
WHEREAS, ASSET leveraged this grant, along with generous
matching support from dozens of private businesses, foundations
and individuals, to serve 565 educators across 24 schools in
this Commonwealth, impacting 38,142 students in grades K-6, of
whom 98% qualified as high-needs or rural; and
WHEREAS, The independent evaluation of the program, released

in May 2016, indicates participating educators developed:
(1) increased understanding of inquiry-based science;
(2) improved pedagogical practices;
(3) increased content knowledge across science,
technology, engineering and math; and
(4) strengthened collaboration with teacher peers;
and
WHEREAS, The independent evaluation also demonstrates that
students increased their performance on State standardized tests
in elementary science and math and ultimately scored:
(1) forty-four and two-tenths points higher in 4th grade
science than a control group of similar grade-level peers;
(2) thirty-six and seven-tenths points higher in 3rd
grade math than a control group of similar grade-level peers;
and
(3) forty-one and eight-tenths points higher in 4th
grade math than a control group of similar grade-level peers;
therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate May 18,
2016, as "ASSET STEM Education Day" in Pennsylvania in
recognition of ASSET's work preparing students to work, live,
contribute and lead in a science and technology-driven economy.
