A RESOLUTION
Commemorating the American Bar Association Division for Public
Education's 29th National Law-Related Education Conference to
be held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, from October 28
through October 30, 2015.
WHEREAS, Law provides an essential context for understanding
society, institutions, norms and values; and
WHEREAS, In order to maintain legitimate authority, law and
legal institutions depend on popular participation and support;
and
WHEREAS, Lawyers and judges have a special responsibility to
foster public understanding of and confidence in the law and
legal institutions; and
WHEREAS, Members of a democratic society seek to resolve
conflicts peacefully and through the legal process; and
WHEREAS, Understanding, appreciating and engaging an
increasingly diverse society promotes effective civic
participation; and

WHEREAS, An understanding of the role of law in various
cultures enhances effective participation in global society; and
WHEREAS, Public understanding of the law promotes access to
the legal system for all people to pursue justice through the
legal process; and
WHEREAS, The American Bar Association (ABA) Division for
Public Education serves ABA members and nonmember lawyers by
encouraging every lawyer to consider it part of his or her
fundamental professional responsibility to further the public's
understanding of the rule of law and the American system of
justice; and
WHEREAS, The ABA Division for Public Education produces
educational programs and resources about law for the public and
promotes efforts by ABA members and others to do the same; and
WHEREAS, The ABA Division for Public Education encourages
everyone to be meaningfully and actively engaged in the civic
life of the nation; and
WHEREAS, The ABA Division for Public Education advocates
policies and supports practices that enable all students to
experience high-quality civic learning, including the study of
law, government and history; and
WHEREAS, The ABA Division for Public Education broadens the
reach and enhances the content of the ABA Division for Public
Education activities by involving diverse people, organizations
and perspectives in their planning, implementation and
dissemination; and
WHEREAS, Every two years, the ABA Division for Public
Education hosts the National Law-Related Education Conference;
and
WHEREAS, The conference is a national assembly of teachers,

professors, lawyers, judges and civic education professionals
who teach about law and its role in society; and
WHEREAS, This year the ABA Division for Public Education
hosts the 29th National Law-Related Education Conference
exploring the theme "The Bill of Rights in the Digital Era"; and
WHEREAS, As the 225th anniversary of the Bill of Rights
approaches in 2016, this conference considers how, and if, the
digital era of the 21st century reshapes our understanding and
teaching of the fundamental guarantees included in the first 10
amendments to the Constitution of the United States; therefore
be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commemorate the
American Bar Association Division for Public Education's 29th
National Law-Related Education Conference in Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania, October 28 through October 30, 2015.
