INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
SEPTEMBER 18, 2015
A RESOLUTION
Recognizing September 15 through October 15, 2015, as "National
Hispanic Heritage Month" in Pennsylvania and honoring Captain
Michael Anthony Bastone, Sr., of the Philadelphia Sheriff's
Office in conjunction with this observance.
WHEREAS, "National Hispanic Heritage Month" is set aside to
mark the independence of certain Latin American countries; and
WHEREAS, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa
Rica, Mexico and Chile observe independence days during this
period; and
WHEREAS, "National Hispanic Heritage Month" further
commemorates the cultural diversity among Hispanic Americans,
who trace their roots to Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central
America and South America; and
WHEREAS, As a nation, we celebrate our growing Hispanic
population and pay tribute to notable Hispanic Americans during
this period; and

WHEREAS, The House of Representatives recognizes, in
particular, Captain Michael Anthony Bastone, Sr., of the
Philadelphia Sheriff's Office, who has attained distinction as
the first Hispanic American to earn the rank of captain within
that office; and
WHEREAS, Captain Bastone entered law enforcement in 1992 as a
correctional officer at the Philadelphia Industrial Correctional
Center; and
WHEREAS, Joining the Philadelphia Sheriff's Office in 1995 as
a deputy sheriff officer, Captain Bastone completed extensive
training and honorably served with the Civil Unit, Warrant Unit
and Transportation Unit while advancing to his current rank; and
WHEREAS, The House of Representatives proudly notes our
Commonwealth's rich multicultural heritage and praises Captain
Bastone's leadership and service within the diverse force of
sworn personnel comprising the Philadelphia Sheriff's Office;
therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize
September 15 through October 15, 2015, as "National Hispanic
Heritage Month" in Pennsylvania and honor Captain Michael
Anthony Bastone, Sr., of the Philadelphia Sheriff's Office in
conjunction with this observance.
