A RESOLUTION
Celebrating the 250th anniversary of the establishment of
Shartlesville in Upper Bern Township, Berks County.
WHEREAS, The village of Shartlesville in Upper Bern Township,
Berks County, was established in 1765 when the Shartle family
erected a structure known as the Shartle Log Cabin Inn; and
WHEREAS, Early settlers in the village built their homes
around the inn in order to seek protection from Native Americans
who, after the French and Indian War, harassed them by burning
their buildings and crops and taking their children captive; and
WHEREAS, Most of the settlers were of German and Swiss
descent and earned a living as skilled carpenters and craftsmen;
and
WHEREAS, By 1830, the village had its own post office, and,
as of 1885, it had 225 inhabitants; and
WHEREAS, During its bicentennial year of 1965, Shartlesville

had a population of 378, and, as of 2004, more than 400 people
called the village their home; and
WHEREAS, Shartlesville has a strong tradition of offering
Pennsylvania Dutch cooking in its restaurants and is a popular
tourist destination for a unique miniature village that is known
across the nation; and
WHEREAS, The year 2015 marks the 250th anniversary of the
founding of Shartlesville; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives celebrate the
250th anniversary of the establishment of Shartlesville in Upper
Bern Township, Berks County.
