A RESOLUTION
Designating August 18, 2015, as "Jonas Oven Preservation and
Restoration Day" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Many early artifacts in this Commonwealth continue
to be lost due to natural events, neglect or destruction; and
WHEREAS, The Jonas oven was built around 1790 and is one of
the oldest manmade structures in Monroe County's West End; and
WHEREAS, In 2005, the Jonas oven was almost lost due to arson
at the Jonas Hotel, Jonas, Pennsylvania, and the proposed
destruction of the hotel by its owners; and
WHEREAS, The Polk Township Historical Society and the Jonas
Snyder family acted to avoid the Jonas oven's destruction and
worked with the owners to donate the Jonas oven to the
historical society; and
WHEREAS, The West End Fair Association agreed to provide a
site for the Jonas oven; and
WHEREAS, The Polk Township Historical Society restored the

oven and made it available to the public and organizations to
demonstrate how baking was done in the 18th and 19th centuries;
therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate August
18, 2015, as "Jonas Oven Preservation and Restoration Day" in
Pennsylvania and join its residents in their celebration of the
preservation and restoration of the Jonas oven for the education
and enjoyment of succeeding generations.
