A RESOLUTION
Honoring the life and memory of Burrell A. Brown, Esq., and
extending condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.
WHEREAS, Born in McKeesport on October 18, 1947, Burrell A.
Brown was the son of Rebecca Frazier McGrew and the late Burrell
Leon Alford, Sr., and Willie and Beatrice Brown; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Brown graduated from California University of
Pennsylvania and earned a master's degree and a juris doctorate
degree from the University of Pittsburgh; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Brown was licensed to practice law in the courts
of this Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Brown was a tenured professor of business at
California University of Pennsylvania, where he taught classes
and conducted research in the areas of ethics, law and labor
relations; and
WHEREAS, A respected union leader, Mr. Brown served the

Association of Pennsylvania State College and University
Faculties in numerous capacities; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Brown served as President of the Pennsylvania
State Conference of the National Association for the Advancement
of Colored People; and
WHEREAS, Before his election as president, Mr. Brown served
20 years as legal counsel to the organization; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Brown was also affiliated with numerous other
civic and professional organizations; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Brown was a founding member and past President
of the Pittsburgh Chapter of the National Bar Association and
the Pittsburgh Chapter of the National Black MBA Association;
and
WHEREAS, Former Governor Tom Ridge appointed Mr. Brown to the
Governor's Commission on African-American Affairs; and
WHEREAS, Former Governor Edward Rendell appointed Mr. Brown
to the Inter-Branch Commission on Racial, Ethnic and Gender
Fairness, where he later served as Chair; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Brown attended the Gethsemane Church of God in
Christ and served as Chair of the Deacon Board, and he further
served as legal counsel to the Western Pennsylvania First
Jurisdiction Church of God in Christ; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Brown passed away at 67 years of age on January
25, 2015; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the life
and memory of Burrell A. Brown, Esq.; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives extend heartfelt
condolences to his wife of more than 39 years, Anita D. Shockley
Brown, his sons, Storm B. J. Gressem, Julian Lerone, Martin
William and Frederick Douglass, eight grandchildren and many

other family members and friends; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to
