A RESOLUTION
Designating April 28, 2015, as "Workers' Memorial Day" in
Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Each year on April 28, communities and worksites
around the world honor friends, family members and colleagues
who have been killed or injured on the job; and
WHEREAS, The Federal Bureau of Labor Statistics has reported
that in 2013 more than 4,400 workers suffered fatal workplace
injuries and more than three million nonfatal work-related
injuries and illnesses occurred; and
WHEREAS, Experts estimate that at least 50,000 deaths occur
annually as a result of occupational diseases; and
WHEREAS, In 2013, 178 workers lost their lives due to
workplace accidents in this Commonwealth, a decrease from 194
fatal workplace accidents in 2012; and

WHEREAS, Fatal occupational injuries in this Commonwealth
have ranged from a high of 354 in 1994, to a low of 168 in 2009;
and
WHEREAS, In 2013, nearly three times as many firefighters
suffered fatal workplace injuries nationwide, increasing to 53
fatalities in 2013 from 18 fatalities in 2012; and
WHEREAS, In 2013, the largest number of fatalities in this
Commonwealth occurred in the transportation and warehousing
sector, including the truck transportation sector, followed by
the construction industry, including specialty trade
contractors, and manufacturing sectors; and
WHEREAS, While news reports often focus our attention on
disastrous workplace events, most of these workers die
individually with little public attention; and
WHEREAS, It is appropriate to honor the memory of the
courageous and dedicated members of this Commonwealth's labor
force who have been injured, disabled or who have died as a
result of workplace accidents or occupational diseases; and
WHEREAS, Recognition of the integrity of this Commonwealth's
work force and its achievements on behalf of the economic growth
of our Commonwealth is necessary; and
WHEREAS, It is appropriate to call for vigilance and
increased safety in the workplace; and
WHEREAS, The House of Representatives wishes to pay tribute
to workers who have died, been injured or disabled as a result
of workplace accidents or occupational diseases, to honor the
contributions of this Commonwealth's work force and to call for
increased workplace safety; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate April
28, 2015, as "Workers' Memorial Day" in Pennsylvania.
