A RESOLUTION
Honoring the life and expressing condolences upon the death of
Colonel George J. Plava, a lifelong resident of the 50th
Legislative District, who passed away peacefully at 97 years
of age on February 17, 2015.
WHEREAS, George J. Plava was born November 7, 1917, in
Brownfield, to George J. Plava, Sr., and Anna (Fetcho) Plava;
and
WHEREAS, Col. Plava graduated from German Township High
School, receiving a teaching certificate from California State
Teachers College of Pennsylvania and a master of education
degree from West Virginia University; and
WHEREAS, Col. Plava married Margaret Frances Balaban of
Masontown in 1954; and
WHEREAS, Col. Plava retired as a United States Air Force
Colonel following 35 years of distinguished military service

with the United States Air Force and the United States Air Force
Reserves; and
WHEREAS, As a World War II pilot, Col. Plava flew supply
planes for his country, receiving the Purple Heart; and
WHEREAS, Following the completion of his active military
service, Col. Plava returned to German Township where he resumed
his career in education, serving as a teacher and principal and
finally retiring as superintendent of the Albert Gallatin School
District; and
WHEREAS, After retirement, Col. Plava continued to serve his
community, becoming a longtime member of the Masontown Library
and the Connellsville Airport Authority; and
WHEREAS, Col. Plava was devoted to his family, faith,
community and country and is greatly missed by his sisters,
Frances Hoon, Eleanor Harris and Louise Lavigne, his extended
family and the community that he served tirelessly; therefore be
it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives extend
condolences to the family of Colonel George J. Plava, a
dedicated and valiant airman, husband, father, grandfather,
great-grandfather, educator and community leader who is
remembered and respected for his service and heroism; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to
the family of Colonel George J. Plava.
