A RESOLUTION

 

1Designating October 6, 2014, as "Pulaski Memorial Day" in
2Pennsylvania commemorating the 235th anniversary of his death
3in 1779.

4WHEREAS, General Casimir Pulaski was born March 6, 1745, in
5Warsaw, Poland; and

6WHEREAS, General Pulaski was a true patriot committed to the
7defense of freedom and the sovereignty of nations; and

8WHEREAS, General Pulaski, who fought against Russian,
9Austrian and Prussian control of Poland, was forced to flee his
10country for France, where he met and became a close friend of
11the American representative and statesman Benjamin Franklin; and

12WHEREAS, General Pulaski joined the Continental Army and
13proved himself to be a brilliant tactician and leader; and

14WHEREAS, General Pulaski's valiant skills and services to the
15American Revolution brought him honor and acclaim; and

16WHEREAS, Named General of the Cavalry on September 15, 1777,
17General Pulaski earned the title of "Father of the American

1Cavalry"; and

2WHEREAS, General Pulaski commanded the cavalry in battles at
3Brandywine and Germantown; and

4WHEREAS, In May 1779 General Pulaski contributed to the
5successful defense of Charleston, South Carolina, against a
6larger British force, breaking British momentum and boosting the
7morale of American troops; and

8WHEREAS, In October 1779 General Pulaski led a charge behind
9the French line of infantry to break the British defense in the
10siege of Savannah, Georgia, where he was mortally wounded; and

11WHEREAS, General Pulaski's lifework and ideals are a source
12of strength and pride to Americans of Polish ancestry and
13reflect the customs and culture of the Polish people; therefore
14be it

15RESOLVED, That the Senate designate October 6, 2014, as
16"Pulaski Memorial Day" in Pennsylvania commemorating the 235th
17anniversary of his death in 1779; and be it further

18RESOLVED, That the Senate extend best wishes to the Polish
19American community in Philadelphia on the 81st anniversary of
20the Pulaski Day Parade.
