1Designating and adopting the Piper J-3 Cub as the official
2airplane of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

3WHEREAS, The Piper J-3 Cub was built in Lock Haven,
4Pennsylvania, between 1937 and 1947 and played a major role in
5the growth of the small aviation aircraft industry; and

6WHEREAS, The Piper J-3 Cub was originally intended for flight
7training but became one of the most popular and best-known light
8aircraft of all time, prompting comparisons to the Ford Model T
9automobile; and

10WHEREAS, During World War II, the Piper J-3 Cub was the
11primary trainer aircraft for the Civilian Pilot Training Program
12and by the war's end, 80% of all United States military pilots
13received their initial flight training in the Piper J-3 Cub; and

14WHEREAS, After World War II, the Piper J-3 cub, built
15exclusively in Lock Haven, found new popularity with private

17The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
18hereby enacts as follows:

1Section 1. Official State airplane.

2The Piper J-3 Cub is hereby designated and adopted as the
3official airplane of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

4Section 2. Effective date.

5This act shall take effect immediately.
