A RESOLUTION

 

1Commemorating October 3, 2014, as "Manufacturing Day" in
2Pennsylvania.

3WHEREAS, The manufacturing sector accounts for a large
4portion of our national and State economy and is responsible for
547% of total United States exports; and

6WHEREAS, Manufacturing comprises 12% of the United States'
7Gross Domestic Product; and

8WHEREAS, For every $1 of goods produced, manufacturing
9generates an additional $1.48 for the economy, which spurs new
10products and innovative manufacturing techniques; and

11WHEREAS, Manufacturing supports 17.4 million American jobs
12and manufacturing jobs have the highest job tenure in the
13private sector; and

14WHEREAS, The average manufacturing worker in the United

1States earns $77,060 annually, including pay and benefits,
2roughly $17,000 more than the national average; and

3WHEREAS, Ninety percent of manufacturing workers have medical
4benefits; and

5WHEREAS, Studies show that nationally, manufacturers are
6responsible for approximately two-thirds of private sector
7research and development; and

8WHEREAS, One of the main challenges facing manufacturers
9today is a lack of skilled labor to fill available positions;
10and

11WHEREAS, The skill gap can be addressed by proactively
12inspiring young people to pursue manufacturing careers; and

13WHEREAS, As our young people graduate from high school and
14college, excellent career paths are available in manufacturing
15as it holds high-paying jobs and a need for skilled workers; and

16WHEREAS, Manufacturing Day seeks to expose young people to
17exciting careers in manufacturing and minimize the skill gap;
18and

19WHEREAS, In support of this recognition, young people should
20be encouraged to participate in Manufacturing Day events across
21this Commonwealth; therefore be it

22RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commemorate
23October 3, 2014, as "Manufacturing Day" in Pennsylvania and
24recognize the economic contributions manufacturing makes and the
25ongoing potential it has in continuing to create new high-paying
26jobs.
