A RESOLUTION

 

1Designating September 21, 2014, as "Peace Day in Pennsylvania."

2WHEREAS, September 21, 2014, marks the 30th anniversary of
3the United Nations International Day of Peace, otherwise known
4as Peace Day; and

5WHEREAS, International Day of Peace was established by United
6Nations resolution 36/67, which was adopted unanimously on
7November 30, 1981; and

8WHEREAS, In 2001, the General Assembly of the United Nations
9unanimously adopted resolution 55/282, which declared September
1021 as an annual day of nonviolence and cease-fire; and

11WHEREAS, The United Nations Association of Greater
12Philadelphia established Peace Day Philly with cooperation from
13a wide range of other groups in order to promote peace and
14nonviolence; and

1WHEREAS, Peace Day Philly, which organizes Peace Day
2activities in the City of Brotherly Love, annually involves
3dozens of local and international organizations in building a
4culture of peace; and

5WHEREAS, This Commonwealth was founded as a haven for civil
6and religious freedom by Quakers and other immigrants who put
7their faith not in war but in peaceful coexistence; and

8WHEREAS, With wars destroying lives and communities in
9nations near and far, peace could not be more desperately
10needed; and

11WHEREAS, It is commendable that peace organizations promote
12the United Nations International Day of Peace; therefore be it

13RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate
14September 21, 2014, as "Peace Day in Pennsylvania."
