A RESOLUTION

 

1Urging the President of the United States and Congress to work
2to secure the release of Meriam Ibrahim.

3WHEREAS, Under Sudanese law, a Muslim who publicly adopts
4another religion commits apostasy and is subject to the death
5penalty; and

6WHEREAS, Doctor Meriam Ibrahim, a Sudanese woman who is not a
7Muslim and who is married to Daniel Wani, an American citizen,
8has been sentenced to death for apostasy in Sudan; and

9WHEREAS, The two children of Mr. Wani and Doctor Ibrahim, 20-
10month old Martin and newly born Maya, who are American citizens
11pending proper documentation, are in prison with Doctor Ibrahim,
12awaiting her execution in two years; and

13WHEREAS, The arrest, trial and sentencing of Doctor Ibrahim
14and the imprisonment of the doctor and her children are
15barbarous actions not worthy of any government or any society;
16and

1WHEREAS, Diplomatic efforts are being made to secure the
2release of Doctor Ibrahim and her children; and

3WHEREAS, These diplomatic efforts may not succeed; therefore
4be it

5RESOLVED, That the General Assembly urge the President of the
6United States to supplement diplomatic efforts for the release
7of Doctor Ibrahim and her children with an immediate executive
8order suspending foreign aid to Sudan until the release of
9Doctor Ibrahim and her children and with potential economic
10sanctions such as seizure of assets; and be it further

11RESOLVED, That the General Assembly urge Congress to
12supplement diplomatic efforts for the release of Doctor Ibrahim
13and her children by taking appropriate legislative action to
14repeal or suspend foreign aid to Sudan and by taking appropriate
15legislative action to support potential economic sanctions; and
16be it further

17RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to
18the President of the United States, to the presiding officers of
19each house of Congress and to each member of Congress from
20Pennsylvania.
