A RESOLUTION
1Designating September 2014 as "Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome
2Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.
3WHEREAS, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is a hormonal disorder
4that affects as many as 5 million women in the United States;
5and
6WHEREAS, One of the leading causes of infertility, Polycystic
7Ovarian Syndrome affects an estimated one in ten women of child
8bearing age; and
9WHEREAS, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is defined as the
10presence of cysts on the ovaries combined with the absence of
11ovulation; and
12WHEREAS, While the cause of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is
13unknown, most experts believe that several factors, including
14genetics, could play a role; and
1WHEREAS, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome can begin in the teen
2years with symptoms such as irregular or no menstrual periods,
3acne, obesity, weight gain, inability to lose weight, breathing
4problems while sleeping, depression, oily skin, infertility,
5skin discolorations, high cholesterol levels, elevated blood
6pressure, excess or abnormal hair growth and distribution, pain
7in the lower abdomen and pelvis, multiple ovarian cysts and skin
8tags; and
9WHEREAS, Women with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome have greater
10chances of developing several serious health conditions,
11including life-threatening diseases such as diabetes and heart
12disease; and
13WHEREAS, There is no known cure for Polycystic Ovarian
14Syndrome, however, by changing lifestyle habits and making small
15changes to diet and exercise, women afflicted with the disease
16can not only feel better, but they can also improve their
17chances of conception by 10%; therefore be it
18RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate
19September 2014 as "Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome Awareness Month"
20in Pennsylvania.
