A RESOLUTION

 

1Designating the month of September 2013 as "Ovarian Cancer
2Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.

3WHEREAS, Every woman is at risk for ovarian cancer regardless
4of age, heritage or medical history; and

5WHEREAS, According to the American Cancer Society, a woman's
6risk of being diagnosed with ovarian cancer during her lifetime
7is 1 in 72; and

8WHEREAS, Ovarian cancer is the ninth most common cancer among
9women and the fifth leading cause of cancer death among women;
10and

11WHEREAS, Approximately one half of the women with ovarian
12cancer are 63 years of age or older; and

1WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society estimates that there
2will be approximately 22,240 new cases of ovarian cancer in the
3United States in 2013 and that 14,230 women will die from
4ovarian cancer in 2013; and

5WHEREAS, Approximately one-fifth of ovarian cancers are found
6at an early stage; and

7WHEREAS, Early detection improves the chances of survival;
8and

9WHEREAS, Nine out of ten women treated for early ovarian
10cancer will live longer than five years after the cancer is
11found; and

12WHEREAS, Ovarian cancer awareness and education is an
13important factor in diagnosis and treatment; therefore be it

14RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
15month of September 2013 as "Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month" in
16Pennsylvania.
