A RESOLUTION

 

1Designating the month of August 2013 as "Produce Month" in
2Pennsylvania and recognizing the contributions of the
3vegetable industry of this Commonwealth to the economy and
4citizens of this Commonwealth.

5WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's vegetable industry generates over
6$148 million in revenues to the economy of this Commonwealth;
7and

8WHEREAS, Four thousand three hundred farm families manage
9about 55,000 acres which produce over 300,000 tons of vegetables
10for fresh and processing use; and

11WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's vegetable growers are national
12leaders in the production of pumpkins, processing snap beans,
13cantaloupes, fresh market sweet corn, fresh market tomatoes and
14fresh market cabbage; and

15WHEREAS, Pennsylvania vegetables are both delicious and
16nutritious, providing important vitamins, fiber and other

1dietary components that are essential to a healthy balanced
2diet; and

3WHEREAS, Health authorities have long encouraged increased
4consumption of vegetables for both nutritional and disease
5prevention purposes; and

6WHEREAS, Fresh Pennsylvania vegetables are available in
7abundant supply and peak quality at community farmers' markets,
8roadside farm markets and supermarkets throughout this
9Commonwealth during August; and

10WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's vegetable industry is committed to
11using integrated pest management and other good agricultural
12practices to produce, in an environmentally sound manner,
13vegetables and vegetable products that are both nutritious and
14safe; therefore be it

15RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
16month of August 2013 as "Produce Month" in Pennsylvania and
17recognize the contributions of the vegetable industry of this
18Commonwealth to the economy and citizens of this Commonwealth.
