A RESOLUTION
1Recognizing November 10, 2013, as "Marine Corps Day" in
2Pennsylvania in honor of the United States Marine Corps'
3238th anniversary.
4WHEREAS, The United States Marine Corps was founded as the
5Continental Marines by a resolution passed by the Second
6Continental Congress on November 10, 1775; and
7WHEREAS, The Marine Corps has fought with great courage on
8six continents and in every conflict in American history,
9including the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, World War I,
10World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam Conflict; and
11WHEREAS, The Marine Corps is serving in support of Operation
12Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan and Operation Iraqi Freedom; and
1WHEREAS, The Marine Corps has fought valiantly in defense of
2the United States and its citizens and principles; and
3WHEREAS, There are approximately 201,000 active duty and
4100,000 reserve members of the Marine Corps; and
5WHEREAS, Marines recognize the Marine Corps as a tradition
6built on time-honored values and principles; and
7WHEREAS, Marines truly embody the motto of the Marine Corps:
8"Semper Fidelis" translates from Latin as "always faithful" and
9signifies the defense of freedom and democracy worldwide; and
10WHEREAS, "Raising of the Flag on Iwo Jima," the famous
11photograph by Joe Rosenthal, will always symbolize the triumph
12and glory of the Marine Corps; and
13WHEREAS, The Marine Corps' Air Ground Task Force integrates a
14ground combat element, an aviation combat element and a
15logistics combat element under a common command element; and
16WHEREAS, Known for its amphibious and land capabilities, the
17Air Ground Task Force operates independently or as part of a
18larger coalition; and
19WHEREAS, During World War I, Marines fought their famed
20Battle at Belleau Wood, establishing their reputation of
21toughness and fierceness; and
22WHEREAS, The Marine Corps played a central role in the
23liberation of the Pacific Islands during World War II; and
24WHEREAS, The momentum of the Korean War shifted when the
25Marine Corps, in conjunction with the Navy, launched a massive
26amphibious attack at Inchon, surprising the North Koreans by
27putting thousands of United States troops behind enemy lines;
28and
29WHEREAS, The Marine Corps participated in major offensives of
30the Vietnam Conflict, engaging in guerrilla warfare,
1implementing unconventional techniques for counterinsurgency and
2working as military advisors to the Republic of Vietnam Marine
3Corps; and
4WHEREAS, From 1990 to 1992, Marines participated in Operation
5Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm, leading the liberation
6of Kuwait and the defeat of Iraqi forces; and
7WHEREAS, The Marine Corps continues to make significant
8contributions to the war on terrorism as part of Operation
9Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan and Operation Iraqi Freedom; and
10WHEREAS, The Marine Corps supports peacekeeping missions and
11humanitarian operations in countries such as Liberia,
12Bangladesh, the Philippines and Somalia; and
13WHEREAS, Marine Corps Order No. 47, Series 192, written by
14Major Commandant General John A. Lejeune, established the
15mandatory celebration of the Marine Corps' anniversary;
16therefore be it
17RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize
18November 10, 2013, as "Marine Corps Day" in Pennsylvania in
19honor of the United States Marine Corps' 238th anniversary.
