A RESOLUTION
1Commemorating the 50th anniversary of the University of
2Pittsburgh at Bradford.
3WHEREAS, On October 16, 1962, the City of Bradford was
4announced as being selected as a "regional campus" of the
5University of Pittsburgh, allowing students to complete two
6years of undergraduate instruction before transferring to
7Pittsburgh to complete their degrees; and
8WHEREAS, On September 3, 1963, the University of Pittsburgh
9at Bradford (Pitt-Bradford) opened with an initial enrollment of
10130 students and offered courses in engineering and liberal
11arts; and
12WHEREAS, In November 1966, Pitt-Bradford had its first
13expansion when the City of Bradford completed the annexation of
14a tract of land, which was planned to be used for athletic
15fields; and
16WHEREAS, A land acquisition on April 17, 1966, enabled Pitt-
17Bradford to start building an entirely new campus west of the
18City of Bradford; and
1WHEREAS, In May 1975, Pitt-Bradford was authorized to offer
2two-year associate degrees and in September of that year classes
3began in petroleum engineering technology, Pitt-Bradford's first
4associate degree program; and
5WHEREAS, Also in 1975, Pitt-Bradford began its first four-
6year baccalaureate programs, allowing students to complete all
7the coursework for their majors at Pitt-Bradford; and
8WHEREAS, In 1976, Pitt-Bradford held its first convocation
9ceremony and later that year the administrative science major,
10the forerunner of business management, was launched and quickly
11became the most popular four-year degree program on campus; and
12WHEREAS, In 1978, Pitt-Bradford established a second
13associate degree program, computer programing; and
14WHEREAS, On October 19, 1978, the trustees of the University
15of Pittsburgh gave Pitt-Bradford the authority to grant
16baccalaureate degrees which empowered it to design its own four-
17year programs and to confer its own diplomas; and
18WHEREAS, Pitt-Bradford has been recognized as one of the best
19colleges in the Northeast and has received similar accolades
20throughout the years; and
21WHEREAS, Not only has the college excelled nationally, but it
22also has taken an international focus, partnering with the
23Yokohama College of Commerce and Heilbronn University, to pave
24the way for study abroad; and
25WHERAS, Pitt-Bradford has been recognized as an economic and
26social "anchor institution" in the Upper Allegheny highlands,
27generating an estimated $67.5 million worth of economic activity
28and creating or supporting an estimated 740 full-time equivalent
29jobs in 2011; and
30WHEREAS, This year marks the 50th anniversary of Pitt-
1Bradford; and
2WHEREAS, After 50 years of operation, Pitt-Bradford is
3greatly respected by the academic community on both the regional
4and national levels; therefore be it
5RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commemorate the
650th anniversary of the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford.
