A RESOLUTION

 

1Recognizing and honoring the National Museum of American Jewish
2History in Philadelphia on the occasion of the exhibit
3"Beyond Swastika and Jim Crow: Jewish Refugee Scholars at
4Black Colleges" and its value to American history.

5WHEREAS, From January 13 to June 2, 2013, the National Museum
6of American Jewish History in Philadelphia features an exhibit
7entitled "Beyond Swastika and Jim Crow: Jewish Refugee Scholars
8at Black Colleges"; and

9WHEREAS, Created by New York City's Museum of Jewish

10Heritage - A Living Memorial to the Holocaust, this powerful
11exhibit depicts how Jewish professors emigrated from Europe and
12found employment at Historically Black Colleges and Universities
13in the Jim Crow South; and

14WHEREAS, These Jewish academics had been terminated from
15teaching positions in the 1930s as Nazi ideology gained momentum
16in Germany and Austria; and

17WHEREAS, This exhibition illustrates the empathy between two

1minority groups with a history of persecution who came together
2in search of freedom and opportunity and shared the early years
3of struggle in the Civil Rights Movement; and

4WHEREAS, These Jewish scholars not only made their mark
5academically but bravely fought for equality and integration in
6the Jim Crow South, bolstering a black-Jewish political
7partnership that significantly influenced the Civil Rights
8Movement; and

9WHEREAS, In highlighting the unique relationship forged
10between the Jewish and African-American communities at a time
11when both groups faced immense prejudice and oppression, this
12exhibit presents an inspiring chapter in the struggle to end
13discrimination in the United States; therefore be it

14RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize and
15honor the National Museum of American Jewish History in
16Philadelphia on the occasion of the exhibit "Beyond Swastika and
17Jim Crow: Jewish Refugee Scholars at Black Colleges" and its
18value to American history.
