A RESOLUTION

 

1Commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Korean War Armistice
2Agreement.

3WHEREAS, The House of Representatives honors the service and
4sacrifice of veterans of the Korean War who served, for the
5first time in history, as part of an American-led multinational
6military force under United Nations Command to protect one
7nation's territorial integrity and independence; and

8WHEREAS, President Harry S Truman ordered United States
9military intervention in Korea on June 27, 1950, two days
10following the invasion of South Korea by Communist North Korea
11in a coordinated general attack along the 38th Parallel; and

12WHEREAS, Nearly 2 million American men and women served in
13Korea, with 36,576 American deaths, in three years of active
14hostilities on land, on sea and in the air over and near the

1Korean Peninsula; and

2WHEREAS, The Congressional Medal of Honor, our nation's
3highest tribute for combat bravery, was awarded to 131 members
4of the United States Armed Forces who served in Korea; and

5WHEREAS, While Operation Glory negotiated the post-armistice
6exchange of the war dead between the United Nations Command and
7North Korea, more than 7,500 Americans remain unaccounted for
8from the war; and

9WHEREAS, The Korean War Armistice Agreement, negotiated for
10more than two years and signed on July 27, 1953, left the Korean
11Peninsula divided at the 38th Parallel much as it had been since
12the close of World War II; and

13WHEREAS, In announcing the armistice to the American people,
14President Dwight Eisenhower remarked:

15Soldiers, sailors and airmen of sixteen different
16countries have stood as partners beside us throughout
17these long and bitter months. In this struggle we have
18seen the United Nations meet the challenge of aggression
19not with pathetic words of protest, but with deeds of
20decisive purpose;

21therefore be it

22RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commemorate the
2360th anniversary of the Korean War Armistice Agreement.
