A RESOLUTION

 

1Honoring the Boy Scouts of America on the 103rd anniversary of
2the organization's founding.

3WHEREAS, In 1907, General Lord Robert Baden-Powell founded
4the scouting movement in England seeking to teach vital skills
5and positive values to youth; and

6WHEREAS, In 1909, Chicago newspaper publisher W.D. Boyce was
7visiting London, England, when he became lost in the fog; and

8WHEREAS, Mr. Boyce was assisted by a young scout in finding
9his way, thus learning of the scouting movement; and

10WHEREAS, Impressed by this incident, Mr. Boyce returned from
11England and incorporated the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) on
12February 8, 1910; and

13WHEREAS, The BSA seeks to instill in its members the values
14of trustworthiness, loyalty, helpfulness, friendliness,
15courteousness, kindness, obedience, cheerfulness, thriftiness,

1bravery, cleanliness and reverence; and

2WHEREAS, Through participation in numerous outdoor activities
3and educational programs, the BSA trains youth in responsible
4citizenship, character development and self-reliance; and

5WHEREAS, The BSA is the largest youth organization in the
6United States, with nearly 3 million members and more than 110
7million Americans having served as BSA members since its
8founding; and

9WHEREAS, Countless prominent leaders in various fields of
10endeavor have credited the skills and values they learned in
11scouting as helping to shape them for success; and

12WHEREAS, February 8, 2013, marks the 103rd anniversary of the
13founding of the BSA; therefore be it

14RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives congratulate the
15Boy Scouts of America on celebrating the 103rd anniversary of
16its founding and commend the organization for its many
17contributions to the young lives of successful American
18citizens.
