AN ACT

 

1Designating a portion of State Route 309 North in Lynn Township,
2Lehigh County, between the intersections of Northwest Road
3and Long Court and Mosserville Road and Mountain Road, as the
4Lance Corporal Brandon J. Van Parys Memorial Road.

5The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
6hereby enacts as follows:

7Section 1.  Lance Corporal Brandon J. Van Parys Memorial Road.

8(a)  Findings.--The General Assembly finds and declares as
9follows:

10(1)  Brandon J. Van Parys was born in Norristown,
11Pennsylvania, on November 2, 1986, and, in 2005, graduated
12from Northwestern Lehigh High School, New Tripoli.

13(2) After high school, he attended Lehigh Career
14Technical Institute where he took courses in law enforcement.

15(3) In November 2005, motivated to serve his country by
16the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, he enlisted in
17the United States Marine Corps.

1(4)  Lance Corporal Van Parys was a member of the 3rd
2Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II
3Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

4(5)  On February 5, 2007, in Anbar Province, Iraq, Lance
5Corporal Van Parys was tragically killed by a rocket-
6propelled grenade while his unit was attempting to secure an
7area along the Euphrates River.

8(6)  Lance Corporal Van Parys heroically paid the supreme
9sacrifice for the country he loved.

10(7)  Lance Corporal Van Parys was posthumously awarded
11the Purple Heart for his courageous service to his country
12and is survived by his father, Alan, and his wife, Tammy; his
13mother, Catherine Hearn and her husband, Gregory; his
14brothers, Christopher Van Parys, Daniel Van Parys, Samuel
15Hearn and Jesse Hearn; and his sister, Ashley Hearn.

16(b)  Designation.--The portion of State Route 309 North in
17Lynn Township, Lehigh County, between the intersections of
18Northwest Road and Long Court and Mosserville Road and Mountain
19Road is hereby designated as the Lance Corporal Brandon J. Van
20Parys Memorial Road.

21(c)  Signs.--The Department of Transportation shall erect and
22maintain appropriate signs to indicate the designation under
23subsection (b).

24Section 2.  Effective date.

25This act shall take effect in 60 days.
