AN ACT

 

1Designating West Erie Avenue from its intersection with North
2Second Street in Philadelphia City, Philadelphia County, to
3the point where it meets North Front Street in Philadelphia
4City, Philadelphia County, as Roberto Clemente Way.

5The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
6hereby enacts as follows:

7Section 1. Roberto Clemente Way.

8(a) Findings.--The General Assembly finds and declares as
9follows:

10(1) Roberto Walker Clemente was born in Barrio San Anton
11in Carolina, Puerto Rico, on August 18, 1934.

12(2) Roberto Clemente is remembered today as one of
13baseball's best all-round right fielders, with one of the
14best arms in baseball. Often referred to as "The Great One,"
15Clemente was the first Latin American player elected to the
16Baseball Hall of Fame.

17(3) Roberto Clemente's life ended on December 31, 1972,

1in a plane crash while en route to Nicaragua with relief
2supplies for earthquake victims.

3(4) In his thirty-eight years, Roberto Clemente became a
4baseball legend in the United States, but in his homeland and
5throughout Latin America he became a national and cultural
6icon. For his "outstanding athletic, civic, charitable, and
7humanitarian contributions," Roberto Clemente was awarded the
8Congressional Gold Medal by the United States Congress in
91973.

10(b) Designation.--West Erie Avenue from its intersection
11with North Second Street in Philadelphia City, Philadelphia
12County, to the point where it meets North Front Street in
13Philadelphia City, Philadelphia County, is designated as Roberto
14Clemente Way.

15(c) Signs.--The Department of Transportation shall erect and
16maintain appropriate signs displaying the name of the highway to
17traffic in both directions.

18Section 2. Effective date.

19This act shall take effect immediately.
