A RESOLUTION

Designating October 15, 2012, as "White Cane Safety Day" in

2

Pennsylvania; the week of October 8 through 15, 2012, as

3

"White Cane Week" in Pennsylvania; and the month of October

4

2012 as "Blindness Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.

5

WHEREAS, The freedom to move from place to place at will and

6

without barriers is one of our most basic human rights, and for

7

people who are blind or visually impaired, the white cane helps

8

to make such freedom of movement possible; and

9

WHEREAS, The white cane demonstrates and symbolizes a blind

10

or visually impaired person's ability to achieve a full and

11

independent life and his capacity to work productively in

12

competitive employment; and

13

WHEREAS, Since its founding in 1910, the Pennsylvania

14

Association for the Blind and its member agencies have

tirelessly supported and promoted the interests of people who

2

are blind or visually impaired and provided essential services

3

to assist blind Pennsylvanians achieve self-reliance and

4

autonomy; and

5

WHEREAS, The Commonwealth supports the vitally important work

6

of the Pennsylvania Association for the Blind as it enhances

7

public awareness about ways to prevent and treat blindness and

8

other serious vision impairments that are highlighted by events

9

each year during the month of October; therefore be it

10

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate October

11

15, 2012, as "White Cane Safety Day" in Pennsylvania; the week

12

of October 8 through 15, 2012, as "White Cane Week" in

13

Pennsylvania; and the month of October 2012 as "Blindness

14

Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.
