A RESOLUTION

Celebrating the 175th anniversary of the founding of Cheyney

2

University.

3

WHEREAS, Cheyney University holds the distinction of being

4

the oldest institution in the nation to educate African

5

Americans; and

6

WHEREAS, Cheyney University was founded in 1837 by Richard

7

Humphrey as the Institute of Colored Youth; and

8

WHEREAS, Cheyney University has created a well-rounded

9

experience for its students by promoting academic excellence,

10

providing global exposure through study abroad programs and

11

enhancing professional development through internships offered;

12

and

13

WHEREAS, Over the last 175 years, Cheyney University has

14

excelled in providing students of diverse backgrounds with

15

access to higher education; and

WHEREAS, The current mission of Cheyney University is "to

2

prepare confident, competent, reflective, visionary leaders and

3

responsible citizens"; and

4

WHEREAS, The mission of the university continues to be

5

fulfilled as more than 10,000 alumni have pursued careers as

6

educators, journalists, medical professionals, business leaders,

7

scientists, lawyers and public servants; and

8

WHEREAS, University alumni understand the importance of

9

education, community service and diversity, which are pieces of

10

many values imparted during their matriculation at Cheyney

11

University; and

12

WHEREAS, Cheyney University alumni have made long-lasting

13

contributions to their local communities, our nation and the

14

world; and

15

WHEREAS, Cheyney University continues to provide benefits for

16

students seeking personal enrichment; therefore be it

17

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives celebrate and

18

recognize the 175th anniversary of the founding of Cheyney

19

University.
