A RESOLUTION

Recognizing and commending the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium for

2

its projects, such as the Botswana Elephant Rescue and

3

"Project Frozen Dumbo," which exemplify the zoo's commitment

4

to biodiversity and species survival and further its mission

5

of fostering positive, lifelong connections between animals

6

and people in a manner that brings honor to the zoo and this

7

Commonwealth.

WHEREAS, Biodiversity is important in the maintenance of the

9

Earth's interdependent ecosystems; and

10

WHEREAS, African elephants are a valuable component of

11

biodiversity; and

12

WHEREAS, The preservation and protection of these magnificent

13

creatures reflects honorably on humans as stewards of the

14

Earth's resources; and

WHEREAS, The Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium maintains an

16

International Conservation Center (ICC) in Somerset County that

17

nurtures, protects and breeds African elephants; and

WHEREAS, The zoo has been internationally recognized as a

2

leader in the field of elephant husbandry through such projects

3

as the ICC and "Project Frozen Dumbo," a successful effort to

4

use native African elephants to artificially inseminate

5

elephants in America to increase the genetic diversity of the

6

species; and

7

WHEREAS, Another project the zoo participates in is the

8

Botswana Elephant Rescue; and

9

WHEREAS, Due to the Botswana Elephant Rescue, three African

10

elephants were saved from execution and brought to the ICC for

11

preservation and breeding; therefore be it

12

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize and

13

commend the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium for its projects, such

14

as the Botswana Elephant Rescue and "Project Frozen Dumbo,"

15

which exemplify the zoo's commitment to biodiversity and species

16

survival, and further its mission of fostering positive,

17

lifelong connections between animals and people in a manner that

18

brings honor to the zoo and this Commonwealth.
