A RESOLUTION

Honoring the memory of law enforcement officers who gave their

2

lives in the line of duty in this Commonwealth and

3

recognizing the memorial service in their honor in Soldiers'

4

Grove at the State Capitol Complex on May 7, 2012.

5

WHEREAS, The following law enforcement officers have made the

6

ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty on the following dates:

7

Police Officer John David Dryer, East Washington Borough Police

8

Department, December 19, 2011; Patrolman Derek Kotecki, Lower

9

Burrell Police Department, October 12, 2011; Police Officer

Robert A. Lasso, Freemansburg Borough Police Department, August

11, 2011; and Deputy Sheriff Kyle Pagerly, Berks County

2

Sheriff's Department, June 29, 2011; and

3

WHEREAS, The deaths of these law enforcement officers make a

4

total of 726 officers who, through the year 2011, made the

5

ultimate sacrifice since the beginning of law enforcement within

6

this Commonwealth; and

7

WHEREAS, A Venango County constable who died in April 1825 is

8

believed to be the first officer to have given his life in the

9

line of duty in this Commonwealth; and

10

WHEREAS, "National Police Memorial Day" is held on May 15

11

each year; and

12

WHEREAS, The week containing May 15 is celebrated each year

13

as "National Police Week"; and

14

WHEREAS, On October 1, 1962, Joint Resolution 730 of the 87th

15

Congress of the United States was signed, authorizing the

16

President to proclaim May 15 of each year as "Peace Officers

17

Memorial Day"; and

18

WHEREAS, Twenty years passed before the first "National

19

Police Memorial Day" was recognized on May 15, 1982; and

20

WHEREAS, May 15 has continued to be observed annually in

21

memory of those police officers who made the ultimate sacrifice

22

in the line of duty; and

23

WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania State Lodge of the Fraternal Order

24

of Police presents the annual memorial service in this

25

Commonwealth; therefore be it

26

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the

27

memories of the following law enforcement officers who gave

28

their lives in the line of duty in this Commonwealth in 2011:

29

Police Officer John David Dryer, Patrolman Derek Kotecki, Police

30

Officer Robert A. Lasso and Deputy Sheriff Kyle Pagerly; and be

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the

memorial service in their honor in Soldiers' Grove at the State

4

Capitol Complex on May 7, 2012.
