A RESOLUTION

Honoring the life and extending condolences upon the death of

2

champion boxer, Joseph William Frazier.

3

WHEREAS, The members of the Pennsylvania House of

4

Representatives wish to express their sincere condolences to the

5

family and friends of Joseph William Frazier, who passed away at

6

the age of 67 on November 7, 2011; and

7

WHEREAS, Mr. Frazier was born on January 12, 1944, in

8

Beaufort, South Carolina. At the age of 15, Mr. Frazier left

9

Beaufort to pursue an amateur boxing career in Philadelphia,

10

Pennsylvania, where he resided until his death; and

11

WHEREAS, Mr. Frazier, as an amateur boxer, won the Middle

12

Atlantic Golden Gloves heavyweight championship three

13

consecutive years, in 1962, 1963 and 1964; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Frazier competed in the 1964 Olympic games held

2

in Tokyo winning the United States of America's only boxing gold

3

medal that year after defeating three international competitors;

4

and

5

WHEREAS, In 1976, Mr. Frazier retired from an eleven-year

6

professional boxing career and began mentoring and training

7

local boxers in Philadelphia; and

8

WHEREAS, After attempting a comeback in 1981, Mr. Frazier

9

decided to retire indefinitely; and

10

WHEREAS, Mr. Frazier's overall boxing record was 32 wins, 4

11

losses and 1 draw, with 27 wins by knockout, and he was a member

12

of the International Boxing Hall of Fame; and

13

WHEREAS, Mr. Frazier will be remembered for his resilience

14

and he will be greatly missed, but his boxing legacy will be

15

forever remembered; therefore be it

16

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives express its

17

sadness upon the passing of Joseph William Frazier and offer its

18

condolences to his family and friends; and be it further

19

RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to

20

Mr. Frazier's family.
