INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, NOVEMBER 1, 2011  

  

  

  

A RESOLUTION

Designating November 2011 as "Alzheimer's Disease Awareness

2

Month" in Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease is a degenerative brain

4

disorder; and

5

WHEREAS, This degenerative brain disorder destroys cells and

6

nerves, disrupting the transmitters which carry messages in the

7

brain; and

8

WHEREAS, Disruption of the transmitters affects a person's

9

ability to remember, speak, think and make decisions; and

10

WHEREAS, Every 70 seconds in the United States another person

11

is diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease; and

12

WHEREAS, It is estimated that 5.3 million Americans now have

the disease; and

WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania Public Policy Coalition of the

3

Alzheimer's Association (PPPCAA) estimates as many as 400,000

4

Pennsylvanians have Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia;

5

and

6

WHEREAS, Seventy percent of Alzheimer's disease care is

7

provided by friends or family members; and

8

WHEREAS, According to PPPCAA, more than one million

9

Pennsylvanians are ultimately affected by Alzheimer's disease

10

and related dementias through affliction or acting as a

11

caregiver; and

12

WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease-related costs to Medicare,

13

Medicaid and businesses in this Commonwealth exceed $6 billion

14

annually; and

15

WHEREAS, The tragic personal toll and associated financial

16

costs of Alzheimer's disease are expected to increase as the

17

average age of this Commonwealth's population continues to rise;

18

and

19

WHEREAS, Despite the painstaking efforts of researchers,

20

medical science has not found a treatment or cure for

21

Alzheimer's disease; and

22

WHEREAS, Finding a treatment to delay the onset of

23

Alzheimer's disease by five years could reduce the number of

24

individuals with the disease by nearly 50%; and

25

WHEREAS, Continued Alzheimer's disease awareness and

26

caregiver support are critical as the medical community

27

continues to search for a treatment and cure for the disease;

28

and

29

WHEREAS, Alzheimer's Association has designated November 2011

30

as "National Alzheimer's Month"; therefore be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate

2

November 2011 as "Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month" in

3

Pennsylvania to raise awareness of Alzheimer's disease in this

4

Commonwealth.
