| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Honoring the life and legacy of Mr. Joseph Anthony Vento and |
2 | extending condolences to his family and friends. |
3 | WHEREAS, Serving as a source of inspiration and generosity to |
4 | his community, Mr. Joseph Vento was an influential South |
5 | Philadelphia entrepreneur, philanthropist and American patriot; |
6 | and |
7 | WHEREAS, Joseph Vento was born on December 18, 1939, to James |
8 | and Eva Vento in Philadelphia; and |
9 | WHEREAS, Mr. Vento served in the United States Army from 1957 |
10 | to 1958; and |
11 | WHEREAS, With no formal higher education, in 1966, Mr. Vento |
12 | opened Geno's Steaks in Philadelphia at the corner of 9th Street |
13 | and Passyunk Avenue with only $6 in his pocket, two boxes of |
14 | steaks and some hot dogs; and |
15 | WHEREAS, Through his determination and the entrepreneurial |

1 | spirit he learned from working in his father's steak shop, Mr. |
2 | Vento expanded Geno's from its humble beginnings to a highly |
3 | profitable business that is an icon of Philadelphia and the |
4 | cheesesteak; and |
5 | WHEREAS, As the grandson of Italian immigrants and through |
6 | his professional success, Mr. Vento understood the value and |
7 | necessity of assimilating into American culture; and |
8 | WHEREAS, By taking a bold stand for the English language, Mr. |
9 | Vento encouraged legal immigrants to learn the English language |
10 | so that, like him, they may have the opportunity to attain |
11 | success and prosperity in the United States; and |
12 | WHEREAS, He shared his success and wealth through donations |
13 | to local charities, law enforcement, military organizations, |
14 | victims of the September 11th attacks, the less fortunate and |
15 | members of the community who suffered unexpected financial |
16 | hardships; and |
17 | WHEREAS, Mr. Vento was an invaluable member of the community |
18 | who championed local issues and never hesitated to help those in |
19 | need; and |
20 | WHEREAS, His life exemplified the American dream and was a |
21 | testament to the ideals of thrift and hard work on which this |
22 | nation was built; and |
23 | WHEREAS, On August 23, 2011, Mr. Joseph Vento died at 71 |
24 | years of age, leaving behind a legacy of professional success |
25 | and philanthropy that will be continued by his family, friends |
26 | and community; therefore be it |
27 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives express its |
28 | profound sorrow over the passing of Mr. Joseph Anthony Vento and |
29 | extend its heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. |
