INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, SEPTEMBER 14, 2011  

  

  

  

A RESOLUTION

Recognizing the 10th anniversary of the September 11, 2001,

2

terrorist attacks and honoring all those who lost their lives

3

on that day.

4

WHEREAS, On September 11, 2001, members of the Al Qaeda

5

terrorist group hijacked and used four commercial airliners in a

6

series of orchestrated suicide attacks targeting both civilian

7

and military targets; and

8

WHEREAS, On this fateful day, both United Airlines Flight 175

9

and American Airlines Flight 11 were flown into the Twin Towers

10

of the World Trade Center located in the Manhattan Borough of

11

New York City; and

12

WHEREAS, More than 2,600 innocent lives were senselessly lost

13

during this individual attack, including the lives of those

aboard both flights, inside of the towers and on the ground; and

2

WHEREAS, During a separate attack in Arlington County,

3

Virginia, American Airlines Flight 77 was hijacked and flown

4

into the side of the Pentagon building, resulting in the loss of

5

125 innocent lives; and

6

WHEREAS, During events on the fourth hijacked airliner,

7

passengers of the United Airlines Flight 93 made a valiant

8

attempt to wrestle control of the aircraft from their terrorist

9

captors; and

10

WHEREAS, The heroics of the selfless and courageous

11

passengers aboard United Airlines Flight 93 aided in averting

12

another national catastrophe, albeit at the expense of their own

13

lives; and

14

WHEREAS, In the course of the struggle for control of the

15

aircraft, United Airlines Flight 93 fatally crashed near

16

Shanksville; and

17

WHEREAS, As a result of the September 11th attacks, a total

18

of 2,976 innocent lives were lost; and

19

WHEREAS, The events of September 11, 2001, are considered by

20

far the worst terrorist attack on American soil; and

21

WHEREAS, On this attack's 10th anniversary, the American

22

people continue to mourn and honor all those who perished and

23

sacrificed their lives in an effort to protect our nation and

24

its citizens; and

25

WHEREAS, Our citizens who lost their lives were far from

26

victims, but instead where noble casualties of a war waged by an

27

intolerant and cowardly enemy; and

28

WHEREAS, The deaths of our citizens will not be in vain as

29

the events of September 11, 2001, have served to bring us all

30

together as a more cohesive and patriotic nation; and

WHEREAS, Since September 11, 2001, our government and

2

military have worked tirelessly to bring justice to the families

3

of all who perished while protecting our ideals; and

4

WHEREAS, Our nation and our dauntless armed forces will

5

continue to uphold our values of freedom and democracy and will

6

remain committed to seeing that justice is served to all those

7

affected by the events of September 11, 2001; therefore be it

8

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives solemnly honor

9

the selfless service and sacrifices of first responders, law

10

enforcement personnel, state and local officials, volunteers and

11

innumerable others who heroically came to the forefront to aid

12

our country and those affected by the tragic events of September

13

11, 2001; and be it further

14

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize

15

September 11, 2011, as the 10th anniversary of the terrorist

16

attacks and further recognize this day as both a day to mourn

17

and a day to remember the many lives lost and the sacrifices

18

made by the brave citizens of our nation.
