| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Recognizing and honoring the 100th anniversary of Saint Raphael |
2 | Parish of the Morningside community of Pittsburgh. |
3 | WHEREAS, On September 30, 1909, several hardworking and pious |
4 | families of the Morningside community sent a letter to Bishop |
5 | J.F. Regis Canevin requesting the establishment of a new parish |
6 | for the purpose of worshipping locally; and |
7 | WHEREAS, In recognition of the parishioners' hardship, Bishop |
8 | Canevin approved their request and established the Saint Raphael |
9 | Church in 1911; and |
10 | WHEREAS, A rented house would temporarily serve as both the |
11 | church and rectory of its first pastor, Father John Gallagher; |
12 | and |
13 | WHEREAS, On August 6, 1911, the parish would celebrate its |
14 | first Mass; and |
15 | WHEREAS, In September 1911, ground for a new church was |

1 | broken on Chislett Street for a facility that would accommodate |
2 | the needs of 500 parishioners; and |
3 | WHEREAS, Construction of the church was finally completed and |
4 | the church was dedicated on December 24, 1911; and |
5 | WHEREAS, The new structure would serve and endure as a house |
6 | of worship to the parish for more than 45 years; and |
7 | WHEREAS, In 1915, as the parish and the number of Roman |
8 | Catholic families began to increase, the Saint Raphael Parish |
9 | Grade School was constructed; and |
10 | WHEREAS, In 1926, the Saint Raphael Parish Co-ed High School |
11 | was opened to serve the educational needs of the burgeoning |
12 | population; and |
13 | WHEREAS, In 1930, the Saint Raphael Parish Co-ed High School |
14 | graduated its first and only co-educational student body; and |
15 | WHEREAS, At the behest of then-Superintendent of Schools, |
16 | Bishop Hugh C. Boyle, the remaining male student body was |
17 | absorbed by Central Catholic High School, an all-boys |
18 | institution; and |
19 | WHEREAS, On March 23, 1958, ground was broken for a new |
20 | church as a result of the generosity of the people of |
21 | Morningside; and |
22 | WHEREAS, In 1959, the cornerstone was laid and the completed |
23 | church was dedicated by Bishop John Wright; and |
24 | WHEREAS, The former church building--known today as Gallagher |
25 | Hall--still stands and serves as both a gymnasium and a hall for |
26 | the school and the site of countless other parish activities; |
27 | and |
28 | WHEREAS, In 1973, the Saint Raphael Parish Co-ed High School |
29 | was forced to close its doors as a result of the opening of |
30 | several regional schools; and |

1 | WHEREAS, Notwithstanding, the Sisters of St. Joseph from |
2 | Baden continued to skillfully and faithfully instruct the |
3 | students of Saint Raphael Elementary School through 2009; and |
4 | WHEREAS, The Saint Raphael Elementary School serves as the |
5 | integrating force for the development of spiritual, physical and |
6 | intellectual gifts within the framework of Roman Catholic |
7 | tradition; and |
8 | WHEREAS, Saint Raphael Parish's rich and longstanding |
9 | tradition of faith, charity and worship is the foundation of its |
10 | 100 years of prosperity and success; and |
11 | WHEREAS, Saint Raphael Parish enjoys a robust membership of |
12 | nearly 1,400 families, which continues to contribute to the |
13 | legacy of the church and surrounding community; therefore be it |
14 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize and |
15 | honor the 100th anniversary of Saint Raphael Parish as both a |
16 | faith community and as an asset to the Greater Pittsburgh area. |
