INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, JUNE 25, 2011  

A RESOLUTION

Celebrating the South Side Local Development Company on its 30th

and final year as an organization.

WHEREAS, The South Side Local Development Company was formed

in 1982 with a mission of historic preservation and economic

revitalization; and

WHEREAS, The South Side Local Development Company was formed

after the Pittsburgh steel mills closed and a sluggish economy

had taken a toll on the South Side; and

WHEREAS, The South Side Local Development Company operates

with a board of 24 directors who are residents and business

owners on the South Side; and

WHEREAS, The company has a professional staff of six and

hundreds of volunteers serving on various committees; and

WHEREAS, Major supporters include UPMC Health Plan, Station

Square, First National Bank, S&T Bank, American Eagle Outfitters

and Pittsburgh Partnership for Neighborhood Development; and

WHEREAS, Some of the first businesses to open on the South

Side in the early 1980s include Mario's South Side Saloon and

Esser's Floral Shop; and

WHEREAS, Presently, South Side is home to a mix of creative

businesses, cafes, restaurants, art galleries, theater and

retail shops; and

WHEREAS, South Side's East Carson Street is recognized as a

local and national historic district and is considered to have

the region's largest and best collection of Victorian commercial

architecture; and

WHEREAS, Main Street on East Carson Street stimulated

investment on the South Side and revitalized the business

district, and in 1996, East Carson Street was one of only five

districts nationwide to receive the National Trust's "Great

American Main Street" award; and

WHEREAS, Under the South Side Local Development Company's

direction over the last 21 years, South Side has seen more than

250 new businesses established, 200 storefronts renovated, 700

new homes constructed and a 12% vacancy rate in 2008, down from

40% in 1982; therefore be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives celebrate the

South Side Local Development Company on its 30th and final year

as an organization.
