A RESOLUTION

Recognizing the many hours that American Association of Retired

2

Persons (AARP) members, particularly volunteers, give in an

3

effort to assist their fellow citizens and encouraging the

4

American Association of Retired Persons and its members to

5

continue to help citizens of this Commonwealth make the most

6

out of life after 50 years of age and to, in the words of

7

American Association of Retired Persons founder Ethel Percy

8

Andrus, "serve and not be served."

9

WHEREAS, The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP)

10

has more than 1.8 million members in this Commonwealth; and 

11

WHEREAS, More than 140 AARP-Pennsylvania chapters provide

12

older Pennsylvanians with opportunities to be active within

13

their communities through volunteer activities, informative

14

meetings, social gatherings and travel opportunities; and

15

WHEREAS, Each year, thousands of Pennsylvania AARP volunteers

16

work in their communities at 390 tax-aide sites providing free

17

tax assistance to more than 113,000 individuals; and

18

WHEREAS, Six hundred Pennsylvania driver safety instructors

19

affiliated with AARP teach driver safety courses to 31,000

20

individuals; and

21

WHEREAS, Pennsylvania WorkSearch and the Senior Community

Service Employment Program helped more than 2,100 older

2

Pennsylvanians connect to local job opportunities; and

3

WHEREAS, Many thousands of volunteers host information tables

4

at fairs and other community events and advocate before the

5

General Assembly on issues important to older Pennsylvanians;

6

and 

7

WHEREAS, The AARP in Pennsylvania provides helpful consumer

8

information on issues ranging from hunger, long-term care

9

services and reverse mortgages to avoiding scams for

10

Pennsylvanians from all walks of life; therefore be it 

11

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the

12

many hours that American Association of Retired Persons members,

13

particularly volunteers, give in an effort to assist their

14

fellow citizens and encourage American Association of Retired

15

Persons and its members to continue to help citizens of this

16

Commonwealth make the most out of life after 50 years of age and

17

to, in the words of AARP founder Ethel Percy Andrus, "serve and

18

not be served."
