A RESOLUTION

Extending a warm welcome to the United States Women's Open golf

2

tournament to be hosted by the Saucon Valley Country Club in

3

Bethlehem on July 6 through 12, 2009.

4

WHEREAS, The Saucon Valley Country Club was founded in 1920

5

and is one of the largest private country clubs in North

6

America, comprising three 18-hole golf courses and a six-hole

7

short course on its 800 acres in the Lehigh Valley; and

8

WHEREAS, As it has five times previously, Saucon Valley

9

Country Club will host a United States Golf Association event on

10

July 6 through 12, 2009, when it hosts the United States Women's

11

Open golf tournament; and

12

WHEREAS, Hosting a U.S. Women's Open involves approximately

13

2,500 volunteers, along with the cooperation of numerous State

14

and municipal officials and law enforcement agencies; and

15

WHEREAS, The event will have an estimated $25 million impact

16

on the local economy and will draw national television coverage;

17

and

18

WHEREAS, International exposure from the event is likely as

19

well, and nine of the last 14 tournament winners have been

foreign-born players; and

2

WHEREAS, An interesting and important component of this event

3

is Adopt-a-Player, a program designed to encourage third and

4

fourth grade school children in Eastern Pennsylvania to develop

5

an electronic "pen pal" relationship with a competitor in the

6

Open and thereby enhance their academic skills and knowledge;

7

and

8

WHEREAS, This Commonwealth is honored to have an event of

9

this magnitude being hosted within its borders; therefore be it

10

RESOLVED, That the Senate extend its warm welcome and

11

hospitality to the United States Women's Open golf tournament to

12

be hosted by the Saucon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem on July

13

6 through 12, 2009.
