AN ACT

Designating State Traffic Route 283 (State Route 300), from the

PA Turnpike Interchange in Lower Swatara Township, Dauphin

3

County, to State Route 30 in Manheim Township, Lancaster

4

County, as the 283rd Field Artillery Battalion Highway.

The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania

6

hereby enacts as follows:

Section 1.  The 283rd Field Artillery Battalion Highway.

(a)  Findings.--

9

(1)  The soldiers of the United States Army's 283rd Field

10

Artillery Battalion served with valor and distinction in

11

combat in the European Theater of Operations in World War II.

12

The battalion was in combat for 268 continuous days and

13

traveled a total distance of approximately 10,757 miles over

14

land and sea during active service.

15

(2)  The 283rd Field Artillery Battalion was activated at

16

Camp Rucker, Alabama, on June 25, 1943. After a year of

17

stateside training, the Battalion sailed to the United

Kingdom on June 22, 1944, where training continued at Camp

2

Llanover, Wales, before cross-channel deployment.

(3)  The 283rd Field Artillery Battalion was part of the

4

historic landing at Utah Beach on August 11, 1944. The

5

battalion fought through France to Berchtesgaden, Germany,

6

during the Campaign for Northern France from August 11 to

7

September 14, 1944.

(4)  The 283rd continued combat in the Campaign for the

9

Rhineland from September 15, 1944, to March 22, 1945, and in

10

the Campaign for Central Europe from March 23, 1945 to May 8,

11

1945 (VE Day).

(5)  During the final campaign, the 283rd Field Artillery

13

Battalion took part in the Battle of Bamberg, the Battle of

14

Nurnberg and the Battle of Munich.

15

(6)  Not organic to any specific division, the 283rd

16

Field Artillery Battalion served under various headquarters

17

of Armies, Corps, Groups and Divisions.

(b)  Designation.--State Traffic Route 283 (State Route 300),

from the PA Turnpike Interchange in Lower Swatara Township,

20

Dauphin County, to State Route 30 in Manheim Township, Lancaster

21

County, is designated as the 283rd Field Artillery Battalion

22

Highway.

23

(c)  Signs.--The Department of Transportation shall erect and

24

maintain appropriate signs displaying the name of the highway to

25

traffic in both directions.

Section 2.  Effective date. 

27

This act shall take effect in 60 days.
