INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, MARCH 22, 2010  

  

  

  

A RESOLUTION

Designating the month of April 2010 as "Pennsylvania Community

2

College Month" in Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS, More than 227,000 students are currently enrolled in

4

credit programs at this Commonwealth's 14 community colleges,

5

and 219,000 students are enrolled in noncredit courses with a

6

focus on increasing workplace skills; and

7

WHEREAS, One out of every five undergraduates of this

8

Commonwealth attends a community college; and

9

WHEREAS, Nine and six-tenths percent of all credits are

10

provided through distance learning courses and programs offered

11

by the community colleges, allowing students to build their

academic credentials and certifications while maintaining their

2

work schedules and family responsibilities; and

3

WHEREAS, Community colleges offer and support dual enrollment

4

of more than 11,000 high school students, representing half of

5

this Commonwealth's school districts; and

6

WHEREAS, Community colleges facilitate high-technology career

7

pathways with seamless curricula by collaborating in 2+2+2

8

project grants; and

9

WHEREAS, Community colleges have developed more than 1,000

10

articulation agreements to ensure that students seamlessly

11

transition from the community college to a four-year degree with

12

more than 20,000 students transferring each year; and

13

WHEREAS, Community colleges offer individualized credit and

14

noncredit courses and programs that enhance the work force

15

pipeline and stimulate this Commonwealth's economy; and

16

WHEREAS, Community colleges are responding to the current

17

economic downturn by implementing tuition waiver programs to aid

18

unemployed workers, whose number currently totals more than

19

3,100, in obtaining crucial skills and knowledge for reentry

20

into the work force; and

21

WHEREAS, Community colleges have developed 84 new or

22

redesigned programs in response to regional needs of employers

23

and work force trends; and

24

WHEREAS, Employers throughout this Commonwealth have

25

contracted with community colleges to provide training for more

26

employees; therefore be it

27

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the

28

month of April 2010 as "Pennsylvania Community College Month" in

29

Pennsylvania and encourage all citizens to recognize, appreciate

30

and support the contributions these institutions make to their
