INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, MARCH 2, 2010  

A RESOLUTION

Congratulating the County of Cameron on its 150th anniversary.

WHEREAS, On March 26, 1860, the General Assembly approved

legislation that created Cameron County from portions of

Clinton, Elk, McKean and Potter Counties; and

WHEREAS, Cameron County was named in honor of Simon Cameron

who, at the time, was a United States Senator from Pennsylvania;

and

WHEREAS, The county's first inhabitants migrated from

Williamsport to timber the forestland, which covers 97% of

Cameron County; and

WHEREAS, The early economies of the county, in addition to

lumbering, were tanneries and a dynamite factory, and in the

1930s the Sylvania Electric Corporation was founded in Emporium;

and

WHEREAS, Flagstone that was used to build the Tomb of the

Unknown Soldier came from Cameron County, as did dynamite that

was used to build the Panama Canal; and

WHEREAS, One of the county's favorite sons is Tom Mix, the

King of the Cowboys in Hollywood's silent screen era; and

WHEREAS, Today, the county continues to be a heavy

manufacturing area, with tool and die shops; and

WHEREAS, This year marks the 150th anniversary of the

incorporation of Cameron County; and

WHEREAS, On March 29, 2010, the anniversary celebration will

begin with the unveiling of the Cameron County Remembers banners

and birthday cake; and

WHEREAS, The year-long celebration continues with a Kayak and

Canoe Classic on April 3, a parade on May 31, a golf tournament

on June 10, fireworks on July 3, a Weekend in the Wilds on

August 21 and another parade on September 4; and

WHEREAS, Cameron County's 150th anniversary is an opportunity

to celebrate its rich past and its ongoing place in the tapestry

of this Commonwealth; therefore be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives congratulate the

County of Cameron on its 150th anniversary.
