| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Recognizing the hour between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. on March |
2 | 27, 2010, as "Earth Hour" in Pennsylvania and directing that |
3 | all nonessential lighting in the State Capitol Building and |
4 | the Governor's Residence be turned off during that hour. |
5 | WHEREAS, In recent years, environmental organizations have |
6 | encouraged the public to live a more "green" existence; and |
7 | WHEREAS, The World Wildlife Fund (WWF®) has made an intensive |
8 | effort to educate the public on carbon footprint reduction; and |
9 | WHEREAS, In 2007, the WWF® initiated a global event known as |
10 | "Earth Hour" to raise awareness of environmental issues, such as |
11 | climate change, pollution and conservation of natural resources; |
12 | and |
13 | WHEREAS, An individual, business, monument or governmental |
14 | entity may participate in "Earth Hour" by turning off all |
15 | nonessential lighting during the designated hour set by the |
16 | WWF®; and |

1 | WHEREAS, In 2007, the first "Earth Hour" was initiated in |
2 | Sydney, Australia, where more than 2.2 million citizens and |
3 | thousands of businesses turned out their lights for one hour; |
4 | and |
5 | WHEREAS, In 2008, "Earth Hour" became a global event with |
6 | more than 35 countries and 400 cities from all seven continents |
7 | participating; and |
8 | WHEREAS, In 2009, the number of countries and cities |
9 | participating in "Earth Hour" rose to 88 countries and more than |
10 | 4,000 cities with estimates suggesting that more than 1 billion |
11 | people participated; and |
12 | WHEREAS, World-renowned monuments, such as the Golden Gate |
13 | Bridge, the Empire State Building, the Eiffel Tower and the |
14 | Great Pyramids, have also participated in "Earth Hour"; and |
15 | WHEREAS, The city skylines of Las Vegas, Hong Kong and Tel |
16 | Aviv have all dimmed their lights in recognition of past "Earth |
17 | Hours"; and |
18 | WHEREAS, The Commonwealth has long encouraged the |
19 | implementation and usage of environmentally friendly practices |
20 | by stressing the importance of conservation of natural |
21 | resources, pollution control, alternative energy cultivation and |
22 | the need to reduce reliance on foreign oil sources; and |
23 | WHEREAS, The Commonwealth will take another positive |
24 | environmental step by participating in "Earth Hour" and join |
25 | many individuals, businesses, monuments and governmental |
26 | entities that have chosen to place a concerted effort on saving |
27 | the planet for future generations; therefore be it |
28 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the |
29 | hour between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. on March 27, 2010, as |
30 | "Earth Hour" in Pennsylvania and direct that all nonessential |
