A RESOLUTION

Congratulating the Triedstone Missionary Baptist Church, in the

2

City of Aliquippa, Beaver County, on the occasion of the

3

centennial anniversary of its founding as the first African-

4

American church in the city.

5

WHEREAS, In 1910, the Reverend Joseph Only and his wife began

6

to hold church services in their home at Logstown, near the Ohio

7

River, along with their four daughters; and

8

WHEREAS, The church moved to the then Borough of Woodlawn in

9

1917, and five years later, land was purchased at 505 Washington

10

Street in the borough, which was consolidated with Aliquippa in

11

1928; and

12

WHEREAS, The basement of the church was constructed under the

13

leadership of the Reverend Harry H. Jones and later by the

14

Reverend Grant Roberts in 1943; and

15

WHEREAS, Reverend Roberts continued as pastor until 1983,

16

giving him the distinction of holding the longest tenure for a

pastor of the church; and

WHEREAS, The church is currently known as the Triedstone

3

Missionary Baptist Church, and in 2010, celebrates the

4

centennial anniversary of its founding; and

5

WHEREAS, Triedstone Missionary Baptist Church is the earliest

6

church to be founded in Aliquippa with an African-American

7

congregation; therefore be it

8

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives congratulate the

9

Triedstone Missionary Baptist Church, in the City of Aliquippa,

10

Beaver County, on the occasion of the centennial anniversary of

11

its founding as the first African-American church in the city.
