| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Honoring the Blankenburg Royalty Chess Team for winning numerous |
2 | awards in multiple local, State and national tournaments, |
3 | thereby establishing the group as one of the premier chess |
4 | teams in this Commonwealth. |
5 | WHEREAS, The Blankenburg Royalty Chess Team was started in |
6 | the spring of 2006 with two students from the Blankenburg |
7 | Elementary School located in West Philadelphia, which is |
8 | comprised of students from kindergarten through eighth grade; |
9 | and |
10 | WHEREAS, Through a partnership with the After School |
11 | Activities Partnership (ASAP), the team obtained needed |
12 | materials, and the number of team members gradually increased; |
13 | and |
14 | WHEREAS, During the 2006-2007 school year, the team made its |
15 | debut in the ASAP Philadelphia Scholastic Chess League and also |
16 | began to attend local chess tournaments; and |
17 | WHEREAS, Although inexperienced, the chess team members from |

1 | Blankenburg Elementary School consistently showed remarkable |
2 | potential by displaying talent, resiliency and competitiveness |
3 | at every competition; and |
4 | WHEREAS, As outside interest in the program increased, the |
5 | team chose to compete in more rigorous competitions rated for |
6 | higher difficulty levels; and |
7 | WHEREAS, The Blankenburg Royalty Chess program has quickly |
8 | established itself as one of the premier chess teams in this |
9 | Commonwealth; and |
10 | WHEREAS, The Blankenburg Royalty Chess Team was founded on |
11 | the vision, commitment, sacrifice and tenacity shared by the |
12 | children and their coach; and |
13 | WHEREAS, The Blankenburg Royalty Chess Team members have won |
14 | more than 50 trophies and 25 medals; and |
15 | WHEREAS, With a total of nine combined national honors to the |
16 | team’s credit in two years, this dynamic chess program is |
17 | continuing to garner attention around the United States; and |
18 | WHEREAS, To their great credit, many team members have earned |
19 | academic honors and several hold leadership positions both in |
20 | the school and the community; and |
21 | WHEREAS, As a result of their involvement on the chess team, |
22 | team members have shown improvement in the areas of |
23 | concentration, critical thinking, patience, self-discipline, |
24 | foresight and sportsmanship; therefore be it |
25 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the |
26 | Blankenburg Royalty Chess Team members and coach for winning |
27 | numerous awards in multiple local, State and national chess |
28 | tournaments and wish the team members continued success in |
29 | future competitions and in becoming well-rounded citizens and |
30 | promising young leaders in this Commonwealth. |
