INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, JUNE 8, 2009  

  

  

  

A RESOLUTION

Designating June 10, 2009, as "Epilepsy Awareness Day" in

2

Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS, Epilepsy is a neurological condition sometimes

4

referred to as a seizure disorder and is characterized by

5

recurring seizures; and

6

WHEREAS, Epilepsy is more common than breast cancer and takes

7

more lives each year; and

8

WHEREAS, Up to 50,000 Americans die each year from seizures

9

and related causes, including Sudden Unexplained Death in

10

Epilepsy; and

11

WHEREAS, There are more people affected by epilepsy than

12

multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy and

13

Parkinson's disease combined; and

WHEREAS, Up to 3% of the population will develop epilepsy

2

before 75 years of age; and

3

WHEREAS, Epilepsy affects more than 200,000 Pennsylvanians

4

and their families; and

5

WHEREAS, The Epilepsy Foundation in Pennsylvania is dedicated

6

to ensuring that all people with seizures are able to

7

participate in all life experiences; and

8

WHEREAS, The Epilepsy Foundation in Pennsylvania works to

9

control, prevent and cure epilepsy through services, education,

10

advocacy and research; and

11

WHEREAS, The prevention and control of epilepsy can be

12

achieved through community education and awareness programs; and

13

WHEREAS, The Commonwealth has supported the creation and

14

expansion of local epilepsy support services and awareness

15

programs through Federal and State appropriations; therefore be

16

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate June

18

10, 2009, as "Epilepsy Awareness Day" in Pennsylvania.
