| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Urging the United States Postal Service to issue a commemorative |
2 | postage stamp in recognition of the career and life |
3 | accomplishments of legendary basketball champion Wilton N. |
4 | "Wilt" Chamberlain. |
5 | WHEREAS, Wilt Chamberlain, also affectionately known as "Wilt |
6 | the Stilt," is universally regarded as one of the most |
7 | extraordinary, gravity-defying basketball players in history; |
8 | and |
9 | WHEREAS, Mr. Chamberlain ranked among the all-time leading |
10 | National Basketball Association (NBA) scorers and rebounders, in |
11 | addition to holding the record for scoring 100 points, the most |
12 | points ever scored in a single game; and |
13 | WHEREAS, Mr. Chamberlain masterfully played 14 seasons with |
14 | the Philadelphia and San Francisco Warriors, the Philadelphia |
15 | 76ers and the Los Angeles Lakers, while earning numerous honors |
16 | for his unmatched abilities; and |
17 | WHEREAS, In his first year with the NBA, Wilt Chamberlain was |
18 | named Rookie of the Year, Most Valuable Player in an All-Star |

1 | Game and the Most Valuable Player of the year, the only player |
2 | ever to receive those honors simultaneously; and |
3 | WHEREAS, In 1979, Mr. Chamberlain was inducted into the |
4 | Basketball Hall of Fame and named one of the 50 greatest NBA |
5 | players in history; and |
6 | WHEREAS, Among other notable accomplishments, Mr. Chamberlain |
7 | played numerous years with the Harlem Globetrotters and was the |
8 | first player to have his jersey retired; and |
9 | WHEREAS, He was an avid financial and physical supporter of |
10 | many organizations, such as Project H.O.M.E., Operation Smile |
11 | and Kansas University Endowment Association; and |
12 | WHEREAS, He developed and supported a women's track team, |
13 | "Wilt's Wonder Women," that featured such greats as Jackie |
14 | Joyner-Kersee, Florence Griffith-Joyner and others; and |
15 | WHEREAS, Mr. Chamberlain unquestionably exemplified superior |
16 | sportsmanship on the court and will forever be remembered for |
17 | his incredible athletic abilities and dominance on the |
18 | basketball court; therefore be it |
19 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commend Wilt |
20 | Chamberlain for his outstanding achievements and urge the United |
21 | States Postal Service to issue a commemorative stamp honoring |
22 | Wilton N. "Wilt" Chamberlain; and be it further |
23 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives urge the |
24 | Citizen's Advisory Committee to recommend to the Postmaster |
25 | General that such a stamp be issued. |
