AN ACT

  

1

Amending the act of March 10, 1949 (P.L.30, No.14), entitled "An

2

act relating to the public school system, including certain

3

provisions applicable as well to private and parochial

4

schools; amending, revising, consolidating and changing the

5

laws relating thereto," authorizing boards of school

6

directors to establish a program to provide high school

7

diplomas to certain veterans.

The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania

9

hereby enacts as follows:

10

Section 1.  Section 1611 of the act of March 10, 1949

11

(P.L.30, No.14), known as the Public School Code of 1949, is

12

amended by adding a subsection to read:

Section 1611.  Academic Degrees.--* * *

14

(d)  A board of school directors may establish a program to

15

be known as "Operation Recognition" which provides for granting

16

a high school diploma to any honorably discharged veteran who

served in the United States military in the Vietnam War between

2

the fifteenth day of November twenty-eighth day of February, one

thousand nine hundred sixty-one, and the twenty-eighth day of

4

March, one thousand nine hundred seventy-three seventh day of

5

May, one thousand nine hundred seventy-five, who attended high

6

school between one thousand nine hundred fifty-eight and one

7

thousand nine hundred seventy-three seventy-five and who would

8

have been a member of a graduation class during the years one

9

thousand nine hundred sixty-two through one thousand nine

10

hundred seventy-five but did not graduate from high school due

11

to entry into military service. A board of school directors may

12

award a diploma posthumously to an eligible veteran. An

13

application for a diploma under this subsection must be made in

14

the manner prescribed by the board of school directors.

15

Section 2.  This act shall take effect in 60 days.
